Research Fellow (PhD position) in Measurement Science and Technology,
Chemical Oceanography group at Geophysical Institute - re-announcement

At the Geophysical Institute ( http://www.gfi.uib.no/ ) a 3-year
position as Research Fellow is available from 1 September 2008 (or
earlier) in the field of Measurement Science and Technology, within
the project "CO2 sensor".
The position is financed by "The Michelsen Centre for Industrial
Measurement Science and Technology" (
http://www.michelsencentre.com/ ); a centre for research based
innovation (CRI) financed by the Research Council of Norway and
partners in the CRI. The project is carried out in a cooperation
between the Geophysical Institute and the Department of Biology (
http://www.bio.uib.no/pages/home.php ) at UiB, Christian Michelsen
Research AS (CMR), ( http://www.cmr.no/ ) Bergen and the industry
partner Aanderaa Data Instruments (http://www.aadi.no/welcome.aspx ),
Bergen. The place of work will be at the Geophysical Institute.

The PhD work will be connected to development of a measurement system
(chemical sensors) for studying the general carbon cycle in the
ocean, for use in studies of the earth's climate changes and for
biological monitoring.

A description of the position can be downloaded from the Internet

subjects, or have submitted their master thesis for assessment by the
application deadline. It is a prerequisite, however, that the
examination results are out within 4 weeks of the closing date for
submitting the master thesis.

Applicants should preferably have a background within measurement
science and technology, possibly with experience from development,
automation and construction of measurement instrumentation. In
particular knowledge of optical measurement technology will be
advantageous. Analytical qualifications corresponding to knowledge on
the measurement of parameters in the general carbon cycle, like Ct,
At, pH eller fCO2, or other relevant measurements, are desirable. The
applicant should possess good cooperation and communication skills.

The research fellow must take part in the University's approved PhD
programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years.
Hence, applicants must meet the formal admission requirements for the
